Audition Date

In-person auditions will take place via time slots at SALT's West Chester location (19 Hagerty Blvd, 19382) on Monday, June 8, 2026. See above to register for a time slot. The callbacks take place if necessary and will be by invitation only. Callbacks will take place on the evening of June 11, also at SALT's West Chester location. If you cannot attend an in-person audition time slot (though that is much preferred), you may submit a video audition to Lmccomas@saltpa.com by June 7. Please put "Midsummer Audition" in the subject of your email. 

Performances & Rehearsals

This production is being sponsored by Hankin Group as a Shakespeare in the Park experience outdoors at Eagleview Town Center. It will be super magical! Performances will take place on the weekend of Sept 25 & 26, 2026 (Sept 27 is a rain date performance). 

The Read Through will take place on the evening of June 21 and rehearsals continue mostly on Sundays & Tuesday/Thursday evenings. A detailed list of our rehearsal/production schedule can be found here. Please be sure to list all your personal schedule conflicts on your audition form. Conflicts with tech and performances are not accepted. (Anyone participating in SALT's Carousel production cannot also be part of this show, as the schedules overlap too much.)

Audition Format

Please prepare:  A Shakespeare monologue to perform. It can be from the show, but it doesn't have to be. It does not need to be memorized. 60-90 seconds in length. Here are some you can choose from if you'd like. We do not expect that everyone who auditions for this show will be an experienced Shakespearean actor. All experience-levels welcome! Our Directors, Ryan & Ally Hagan, ARE trained and experienced in Shakespeare, and are looking forward to developing this ability in local actors. For the audition, do your best to comprehend and internalize the content of what you are speaking so that it comes across understandably to us. Choose a piece you love to perform, make bold choices, and most importantly, have fun! We encourage you to perform in your natural voice. Please do not use a British accent unless it is your own. If you sing or play an instrument, we would love for you to prepare a short selection (8-16 bars). 

 

Character Descriptions

This is a community theatre production. All cast members are unpaid and perform on a volunteer-basis for the love of it. All roles are open, and SALT encourages all performers to submit for any role regardless of type, gender, ability, race, ethnicity, sexuality, neurodiversity, and similarity to the source material or original Broadway cast.  

We are seeking to cast the following roles:

Oberon / Theseus – male presenting, 30s–50s – Oberon is the powerful and manipulative King of the Fairies, while Theseus is the authoritative Duke of Athens preparing for his wedding. Both roles require command, presence, and a strong sense of control in very different worlds. 

Titania / Hippolyta – female presenting, 30s–40s – Titania is the ethereal and strong-willed Queen of the Fairies, while Hippolyta is the poised and regal Queen of the Amazons engaged to Theseus. Requires grace, strength, and emotional depth. 

 

Puck / Philostrate – any gender, 20s–40s – Puck is a mischievous fairy servant to Oberon who delights in chaos and playful manipulation, while Philostrate is Theseus’ orderly and practical Master of Revels. Requires strong physicality and the ability to contrast chaos with control. 

 

Hermia – female presenting, 18-30s – The daughter of Egeus, fiercely independent and deeply in love with Lysander. Strong-willed, passionate, and unafraid to challenge societal expectations. 

Lysander – male presenting, 18–early 30s – A romantic and rebellious young nobleman deeply in love with Hermia. Passionate, impulsive, and willing to defy authority to get what he wants. 

Helena – female presenting, 18-20s – Hermia’s closest friend who is hopelessly in love with Demetrius despite his rejection. Emotionally vulnerable, self-deprecating, and capable of both deep sincerity and comedic desperation. 

Demetrius – male presenting, 18–early 30s – A nobleman of Athens who is initially in pursuit of Hermia despite once being in love with Helena. Proud, intense, and struggling between doing what is expected of him and what he actually feels. 

Nick Bottom – male presenting, 20s–50s – A weaver and enthusiastic amateur actor chosen to play Pyramus. Bold, confident, and hilariously unaware, with a larger-than-life personality that drives the comedy of the play. 

 

Egeus / Peter Quince – male presenting, 30s–50s – Egeus is Hermia’s father, a traditional and authoritative figure who insists she marry Demetrius. Represents law, order, and societal pressure. Quince is the well-meaning but overwhelmed director of the mechanicals’ play. Requires strong comedic contrast.

 

Francis Flute (Thisbe) – any gender, 18-20s – A young bellows-mender cast as Thisbe, despite his reluctance. Earnest, slightly awkward, and capable of strong comedic transformation. Also part of the Fairy ensemble, requiring physicality and quick character transitions.

 

Tom Snout (Wall) – any gender, 20–60 – A tinker cast as the Wall in the mechanicals’ play. Practical, literal, and unintentionally comedic. Also part of the Fairy ensemble, requiring physicality and quick character transitions.

 

Snug (Lion) – any gender, 20–60 – A joiner cast as the Lion who is nervous about performing and worried about frightening the audience. Sweet and hesitant. Also part of the Fairy ensemble, requiring physicality and quick character transitions.

 

Robin Starveling (Moonshine) – any gender, 20–60 – A tailor cast as Moonshine in the mechanicals’ play. Timid, anxious, and often overshadowed, with dry comedic potential. Also part of the Fairy ensemble, requiring physicality and quick character transitions.

Compensation

This is a community theatre production performed on a volunteer basis.
