Character Descriptions

This is a community theatre production. All cast members are unpaid and perform on a volunteer-basis for the love of it. All roles are open, and SALT encourages all performers to submit for any role regardless of type, gender, ability, race, ethnicity, sexuality, neurodiversity, and similarity to the source material or original Broadway cast.

We are seeking to cast the following roles:

Evan Hansen
Smart, sincere, and excruciatingly self-conscious, Evan prefers to hover in the background, a supporting player in his own life, too afraid to step forward into the spotlight and risk ridicule or, what might be worse, no one noticing him at all.
Pop tenor, Vocal Range G2- C5 (Stage Age 16-25)

Heidi Hansen
Evan’s mother. Overworked and stretched too thin, Heidi loves her son fiercely, but fears they have begun to grow apart. She is prepared to do anything to repair the damage.
Pop alto, Vocal Range F3-Eb5 (Stage Age 40s)

Zoe Murphy (Actor)
Connor's younger sister and Evan's longtime crush. Sensitive and sophisticated, with a sharp sense of humor, Zoe could care less about the status games and popularity rites of high school. She feels a terrible ambivalence over her brother’s death. **We are specifically seeking a Deaf/Hard of Hearing actress who will portray Zoe. Must be comfortable with physical storytelling and proficient in ASL.
Non-Singing (Stage Age 16-25)

Zoe Murphy (Voice)
Hearing actor who will provide Zoe’s spoken and sung voice. Will work together with Actor Zoe as a single character, and should be prepared to collaborate closely throughout the process. **If you are auditioning for the Voice of Zoe Murphy, we would also like to see you accompany yourself on an acoustic guitar, or another similar instrument, for one of your vocal selections. This is preferred, but NOT required.

Pop soprano, Vocal Range F3-E5 (Stage Age 16-25)

Connor Murphy
An angry, disaffected loner, Connor has been a troubled kid for as long as anyone can remember, an enigma and a source of endless consternation to his long-suffering parents.

Pop baritone/tenor, Vocal Range C3-G#4 (Stage Age 16-25)

Cynthia Murphy
Connor and Zoe's stay-at-home mother. To Evan, she seems to be the perfect mother, nurturing, available, and willing to talk about anything. To her own children, it’s a bit more complicated.
Pop soprano, Vocal Range F3-E5 (Stage Age 40s)

Larry Murphy
Connor and Zoe’s father. Though often tense and taciturn, Larry shows a different face to the world, representing for Evan the dad he always wished for: strong, confident, and more than anything, reliable, someone to be counted on.
Pop baritone/tenor, Vocal Range Bb2-G4 (Stage Age 40s)

Jared Kleinman
Evan's droll and sarcastic friend. Jared covers his own insecurities with a well-practiced swagger and a know-it-all arrogance.
Pop tenor, Vocal Range D3-B4 (Stage Age 16-25)

Alana Beck
Evan's earnest but melodramatic classmate. Alana hides a deeper loneliness beneath an ever-present smile and an almost aggressive friendliness.
Pop soprano, Vocal Range F3-E5 (Stage Age 16-25)

Ensemble
Various characters who will actively be used in the show for modern dance, dynamic storytelling, and the Virtual Community.
All vocal ranges (Stage Ages 16+) **Proficiency in ASL strongly preferred, so please indicate any experience on your audition form.
